Divali night in Mauritius

Tonight will be Divali night in Mauritius. Divali, also called Diwali or Dipavali is the second most important Hindu festival in Mauritius after the Mahashivarathree. This festival is known in Mauritius as Divali and it is celebrated by 48% of the Mauritian population which represents the Hindu community. 

It is believed that on this particular night, Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, visit the Hindu family. To welcome her, houses, doorsteps and courtyards are cleaned thoroughly and decorated with gorgeous fairy lights, colour garlands and candle lights. Walkways are lined with small clay lamps or ‘diyas’ to show the way.
Divali in Mauritius is also a moment of sharing. Hindu families will cook traditional sweet potato cakes among other sweet cakes to share with visitors, neighbour and friends.
This is the night where Mauritius is transformed into a colourful fairyland. Expect to hear thundery firecrackers and fireworks all over the island, sound and lights of which is believed to ward off evil spirits.
Divali in Mauritius marks the beginning of summer festive seasons in Mauritius till the New Year.
During the season, the island is dressed with colourful red, purple, blue and yellow flowers from nature; among which, flame trees stand out with the abundance of its red flowers.
